Social networks are becoming more walled off, as evidenced by changes to the Instagram and Facebook platforms in recent years, as well as the emergence of TikTok's popularity. What this means for the brand marketer is that individual social networks can no longer be the centerpiece of an influencer strategy. As with the demise of Instagram Likes, no single platform can be trusted to maintain your best interests or even influencers' best interests.

Therefore, an important strategy in 2020 will be to focus on "full-stack influencers", or influencers who operate across all the popular social networks as well as their own blog.

Recent years have seen an influencer marketing boom. Along with the increased demand by brands and agencies for influencer marketing solutions, we've also seen the number of influencer marketplaces and databases dramatically increase.

There's a problem with the way the industry is trending, however: influencers now have very little loyalty to individual brands. When brands can sign up for one of a thousand different influencer databases and swipe a credit card, they get an influencer who's playing the field -- someone who works for both Coca Cola and Pepsi, for instance. Alternatively, brands may get a first-time influencer from an unvetted database and feel a sense of buyer's remorse.

Instagram API Changes:

On April 4th, Instagram removed access to much of their API. It is no longer possible to get some information for Instagram users who have not directly connected with your brand. This move is almost certainly in response to increasing pressure on Facebook to protect users' privacy and to reduce their own liability as data stewards. The new Instagram API, powered by the Facebook Graph API, is not a replacement and does not offer as much data access as the previous API.
